Busy Weekend!

Wow! What a weekend we've just had!

It began on Friday evening with the launch night of our most recent single 'Falling For Orpheus' at the Watershed in Bristol.

The night started with brilliant pianist Ed Wren, joined by the equally talented Zoë Wren on vocals, who together performed a lovely chilled out set including the second part to 'Falling For Orpheus', named 'Eurydice Rising'. Ed later left the stage and Zoë picked up her acoustic guitar taking the night in a more folky direction. After this we had a short interval to give the wonderfully attentive audience a break and re-set the stage.

After a short break warming up, tuning our many many instruments, and running about the place in our ridiculous heels, we took to the stage. It was an absolute honour to play to such a wonderful audience. Also to have such beautiful projected visuals displayed behind us by Scott Quinn, and to be joined once again by the amazing Dear Light - Zoë kindly joined us for 'Falling For Orpheus' too.

Once the night was over we packed up and headed home to what would be a very short sleep before we were up again to play in Head Bristol as part of Record Store Day. In contrast to the previous night we played a much more subdued acoustic set. It was fun to do something so different.

We again got back into our rather cramped 'tour bus' and drove over to Chiselborough, near Yeovil Somerset where we would be playing a show in the village hall. This was the second village hall event we had been involved in and it was equally lovely. This time we'd come laden with candles and homemade cakes.

Beginning the night was wonderful folk musician Sharon Martin with her brilliant new band The Occasional Band. We then finished the evening with another acoustic(ish) performance and wrapped up a very enjoyable weekend.

Filming 'Falling for Orpheus'

The video for 'Falling for Orpheus' is nearly finished!

This is the first time that we went all out with making a music video and it's definitely paid off. Instead of attempting to film it ourselves, we got director Corry Raymond on board and his work is just brilliant. Working with someone new was initially scary as we've never really been told what to do or how to behave in a story-based music video before, we just did what we felt would work. But we soon relaxed and it became very enjoyable. Corry had a set idea of how he wanted the video to play out and having that kind of purpose was something none of us ever really had when previously filming. We just made it up as we went along.

We also worked alongside Anja's brother and filmmaker Scott Quinn who directed our 'Starlight' video and edited 'Dreams'. He was taking a step back for this video and assisting Corry in camera work and sound and it was lovely to see two professionals working so well together.

The first day of filming we did at Weston College in their performance studio. This was our section where we sat and sang looking moody. There were several sections where some of us had to hurriedly exit the shot when the camera moved away then back again which was actually really fun. We had a set word for when we were out of shot so that we could run off before we came back into it again.

The second day we did a couple of weeks later at the Bristol Dance Centre. Two very lovely and talented dancers, Mathieu Gence and Amy Thomas agreed to play our Orpheus and Eurydice with choreography from Judith Jarvis. This was the most wonderful performance we could ever have wanted.

Mathieu and Amy moved so well together and it was so beautiful watching them. Initially they arrived and ran through their dances with the help of Judith giving them advice and ideas on different areas. Despite very short notice they stepped up to the challenge of learning and creating dances. They then got changed and performed to us several times with different camera shots and movements to get the most amazing looking video.

The only parts we played on this day was Sally filming her electric guitar solo, and then taking it in turns to be the gripper (holding the extension lead for Corry's camera charger so that he didn't trip over).

This has been an awesome experience and we cannot wait to show everyone the outcome. The video will be released very soon!

New Release - Falling for Orpheus

Our new single, Falling for Orpheus, is now available for pre-order!

Written in collaboration with Bristol based writer Richard Williams, Falling for Orpheus is a modern take on the Greek Myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.

We will be launching Falling for Orpheus at the Watershed in Bristol on 17th April. Our special guests for the night will be Zoë Wren and Ed Wren. Advance tickets for the show are also now available at £7.

Upcoming shows - March/April

You may have noticed that we've been rather quiet in the last few weeks. We have actually been busy making some acoustic videos in a church, which we will be showing to you very soon. Tomorrow we will also begin filming a music video for our next single - 'Falling For Orpheus' (more details of the launch are below).

 

Now on to what we really want to tell you about – after a month's break from gigs we have a number of shows coming up in March and April.

First off, on 4^th March we will be travelling back to London to play at The Bedford in Balham, alongside the Willow Band, Viara Ivanova and Yasmin Corrigan.

On 13^th March we'll be playing in Buckland Dinham Village Hall near Frome in Somerset. Support will be from our friend Bashema, plus local artist - Amelia Lewis. Tickets are available from Jelli Records priced £6.

Then on 24^th March we're playing again in London at the Finsbury. Details to be announced soon...

On 28^th March we'll finally be returning to Bristol to play at The Crazy Fox, with support from brilliant artists, The Black Feathers and Tamara Parsons-Baker, plus poet George Chopping master of ceremonies. Entry is £5.

Finally, come April 17^th in Bristol we will be releasing our single 'Falling For Orpheus' – A modern twist on the Greek myth of Orpheus & Eurydice. We can promise it will be something a bit different. We're also lucky to have the amazing Zoë Wren and Ed Wren (no relation) supporting us.

Note that this was to take place at The Arnolfini but has had to be moved due to unforeseen circumstances. We are hoping to be able to announce a new venue just across the water very shortly.

Falling for Orpheus/Eurydice Rising at Arnolfini Bristol 10/01/2015

Our first gig of the year on Saturday 10^th January did certainly not disappoint. You may have heard us talking about the Orpheus and Eurydice project we’ve been working on alongside composer Richard Williams.

Saturday was the first event for the project, which was held in the Dark Studio at the Arnolfini. We had never played there before and it really did have the most artistic and tranquil atmosphere, something we often search for to suit our ‘moody and dark’ sound.

Falling for Orpheus/Eurydice Rising is a project originally founded by Richard Williams, a series of songs relating to the Greek Myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. As a composer, Richard would write the chords and pass them on to a musician/band he felt could complete and perform the song, feeling that an artist can connect more fully to lyrics they themselves have written. He initially contacted Zoë Wren and together they co-wrote their song ‘Eurydice Rising’, a modern take on Eurydice rising from the underworld. We were then contacted about the project and agreed to write the linking song, Eurydice falling to the underworld and her lack of power as a woman.

As the opening event, this was a short evening in a small room with all acts involved in the project performing, including Ed Wren, the opening artist of the night. We hope that everyone that was able to attend gained an understanding for the feel of the project, which will have its second much larger event on the 17^th April. Details included at the end.

It was a delight to see the room full with people before the night started with Ed Wren and his accompanying band. Creating wonderfully dynamic and soothing music from a range of obviously talented musicians, they were definitely not one to miss. Ed’s set consisted of instrumental pieces, as well as songs with vocal accompaniment from Johnny Velon and the headline act Zoë Wren. Together Zoë, Ed and the band finished the set with Zoë’s ‘Eurydice Rising’.

We then played our set, which was a more acoustic and chilled version of our electric set. It was a really enjoyable experience; we loved the intimacy of the close and quiet audience. After playing some songs from our album we ended on our song ‘Falling for Orpheus’.

The night then ended with Zoë Wren’s set. We had the fortunate experience of playing with Zoë in London a few months ago at The Lantern Society, and once again her set was absolutely lovely. Zoë has an effortless and beautiful voice which complements her guitar playing perfectly. It was a pleasure to see her perform again and we very much look forward to the next time.

For anyone who is interested in Falling for Orpheus/Eurydice Rising, the next event will be held on 17^th of April at the Arnolfini.This will include all the same acts, though with different accompanying musicians, as well as between-act entertainment. Our song ‘Falling for Orpheus’ will be released on the night, available to purchase online. We will be playing a full electric set and Zoë will be collaborating with both us and Ed Wren as well as playing her own set.
